The key to your rooms feel
Flick through any home interiors magazine and you will notice how key texture is in creating the right feel to a room.
From curtain and blind fabric to wall coverings and soft furnishings such as cushions and throws, the combination can have a real impact on both comfort levels and overall look.
Whether you are starting from a blank canvas or making subtle tweaks to existing decor, you can quite easily achieve a feeling of comfort and warmth through a combination of wall coverings and fabrics.

Get hands on
From the organic, uneven texture of slub linen to luxuriously soft velvet, cosy boucle and sheer voile, there are so many different options available when it comes to fabric.
And it goes without saying, if you are focusing on texture, you really need to explore the fabrics in person. We have an extensive range to choose from at our Colchester showroom so you can run your fingers over the different types and discover the textures you love the best.
For curtains, it’s also worth considering the type of pleat you choose, as the way they hang can emphasise the texture of the fabric. For example, pinch pleats really celebrate a heavy texture while Wave pleats are perfect for a more subtle look.

Layer up
Dressing a window with two curtain types not only adds depth to your room design but offers flexibility, too. For example, a sheer fabric such as a voile offers privacy and diffuses the light during the day but can be coupled with a rich velvet to add drama when the curtains are closed at night. Other great options to layer with are linens for a relaxed look or boucle for a tactile finish.

Think texture rather than print
If you are aiming for a neutral and calm feel, place the emphasis on texture as opposed to pattern. For example, choose a jacquard for the blinds, a woven fabric sofa, a chunky knitted throw and a fabric effect wallcovering on one wall, all in neutral tones.

Celebrate soft furnishings
Reupholstering a favourite foot stall, chaise or chair can give you the opportunity to add further texture to a room with irresistible fabrics such as velvet or jacquard adding depth and interest. Throw cushions with an interesting trim can also work wonders. We offer an upholstery service at Dean & Co – just speak to one of the team to find out more.

Don’t forget your walls
Forget old fashioned woodchip! Today there are so many beautiful textured options when it comes to wallpaper. We really love grasscloth with its natural, woven look and high-end feel. Fabric effect wallpaper adds warmth without using a heavy pattern while vinyl wall coverings are great at imitating textures such as stone or plaster and are a practical option for kitchens, hallways, or bathrooms.
