Deter thieves while you’re on holiday: electric curtains & blinds

When the weather is like this, I can’t help thinking about holidays and getting away. The idea of lying on a sun-soaked beach with a cool drink is so appealing!

As we approach the holiday season, a lot of us will be wanting to escape. And with that comes the niggling worry of leaving our homes untended… A neighbour of mine used to ask me to close his curtains for him while he was on holiday. He worked from home and was worried about leaving his computer equipment. He had a burglar alarm, but was concerned about the cat setting it off. I went round each night and morning for two weeks, opening and closing his curtains. Yes, I did get a big box of chocs on his return!

There is an excellent way to make your home feel more secure, and appear lived in, even while you are away. The answer is motorised curtains and blinds.

Motorised curtains and blinds help deter burglars

Unfortunately, one of the most common criminal acts is burglary, so thinking about how you can secure your home is very important. Electric window blinds and motorised curtains are a great place to start. They prevent burglars from scanning your home for valuables, stop thieves from entering your home unnoticed and give the illusion that there is someone home, even when there isn’t.

Burglars often choose empty and easy homes to rob. “Most criminals who burglarize homes are looking for an easy hit; a house that they can break into quickly, take something of value and leave without being detected. Yes, there are professional burglars who gain entry into almost any home if they want, however, most criminals who break into homes are opportunists who got lucky with an open window or unlocked door” says detective Kevin Coffey, a 33-year police veteran and expert in travel safety.

Wireless control systems give you the ability to set specific times to raise and lower your blinds or to open and close your curtains. It is a great way to give the impression that someone is in the house, making it less likely for a burglar to cause trouble.

What do burglars look for?

So what does a burglar really want? Most likely, easy and portable goods, such as laptops, phones and jewellery. Unfortunately, many burglars are smart and wise to hiding places, obvious or not. They also look for easy access. So how do you help yourself?cyberscooty-thief-800px

  • Keep your doors locked whenever possible
  • Get yourself some good window locks such as deadlocks
  • Get a burglar alarm (see below for options)
  • Install CCTV
  • Install motorised blinds/curtains

Advice from the police about making sure your home is secure whilst you’re on holiday

Home security advice from the Police

Going on holiday

Suspend any deliveries such as milk and newspapers
Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your home
Try to make your home look occupied while you are not there. Use timer switches on lamps or on your radio.

Security outside your home

Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they connect to your property
Visible burglar alarms and carefully directed security lighting can deter burglars. Make sure alarms stop sounding after 20 minutes and lights don’t disturb your neighbours.

Intruder alarms

If you don’t have an intruder alarm installed, we would suggest that you consider it. Intruder alarms may prevent intruders from breaking into your home as a visible deterrent. Alternatively, if any intruder does attempt to break into your home, the alarm activating may scare them off.
If you are considering buying a new intruder alarm, it’s a good idea to obtain at least three quotes from the industry approved (NSI or SSAIB) or talk to your insurer who may have some recommendations.
You can also use the trading standards website “Buy with Confidence“.

There are three types of alarm available:

  • Monitored alarm – if the system is breached, a monitoring station informs the key holders and police within minutes.
  • Audible only alarm – if activated, an alarm sound will alert your neighbours.
  • Auto – dialling alarm – if the alarm is activated, the sound will alert your neighbours and the system will dial a series of telephone numbers.

However you protect your home, I hope you’re able to get away for a lovely summer holiday!
